No-cost football clinic for youth sponsored by NFL
Saturday, June 7th, 2008YORK, Maine ¡ª Youth ages 11 to 14 will have the opportunity to attend an NFL-sponsored football clinic, July 15-17 and 21-24, on the Portsmouth Christian Academy’s campus in Dover, at no charge. This seven-day clinic will be held evenings from 5 to 8 p.m., and open to only 150 players on a first-come, first-served basis.
Teams will be grouped both by weight class and skill levels to create competitive match-ups. This is a full-contact clinic with equipment provided by Riddell Equipment.
Known as the Junior Player Development program, the NFL formed this program to introduce and support the game of football at the youth level. A very selective number of camps are sponsored across the nation. The tenacity of a handful of area parents and coaches, including the non-profit group Coaching Our Youth, over the last couple of years resulted in giving the Seacoast the exposure it needed to get noticed by the NFL jerseys N.Y. headquarters.
“In addition to sharing our love of football with these kids, it’s also important to give our youth plenty to do this summer that is fun, affordable and constructive,?said Sue LeClair, the site manager and a board member of Coaching Our Youth.
The camp will use a 12-practice plan in which players are introduced to every position on the field through instruction of fundamentals and techniques. It will also focus on important life skills which will be integrated through on-field activities. As a bonus, campers will get to take home some NFL goodies, including an NFL athletic bag and a jersey.
